strategic direction

Casa Ruben is one of the most community-oriented clinics. Our vision guides us to serve the necessities of the most vulnerable. This is the reason why we have created a Strategic Direction with which we will work.

how we work

Health equity

For racial and ethnic minorities, the lack of access to COVID-19 testing, vaccines and even prevention messages from their trusted providers as well as other routine medical services was exacerbated by pandemic restrictions. During the pandemic, community practices were forced to close their doors and later, as safety precaution, open with limited access. Black and brown individuals went to emergency rooms and urgent care clinics and other settings for covid-19 testing to be turned away for fear of contagion, then, they could not get access to the vaccines. Many lost their trust in health care organizations and systems of care.  The above restrictions, vaccine distribution inequities and lack of easy access to vaccines created a deeper gap in health care, which was filled with misinformation, conspiracy theories and even non-traditional/folk approaches when they felt sick or needed prevention/vaccination. Many could not afford to take off from work for an appointment or get side effects missing additional days of work. This is the case of the Latino community in Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and Baltimore City.
